In 2001, archaeologists discovered a section of Maya writing that is believed to date back to 300-200 BC at a site in the city of San Bartolo, Guatemala. This discovery indicated that writing developed in the Maya civilisation at a much more similar rate to that of the writing of other Mesoamerican cultures than was previously believed. The meaning of the writing is difficult to decipher, although the character for 'ruler' or 'lord' is clearly distinguishable. This suggests that the writing may relate to a particular deity or historical figure. Source, National Geographic: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/01/0105_060105_maya_writing.htm l
