The longest career as a TV naturalist is 72 years 243 days, achieved by Sir David Attenborough (UK) between 2 September 1953 and 3 May 2026.
This also means that the veteran documentary maker and conservationist, who turned 100 in May 2026, boasts the longest career as a TV presenter overall. He made his on-screen debut on segment Animal Disguises (UK), part of BBC Children's Television, on 2 September 1953. The fifth and final episode of his most recent series, Secret Garden (BBC, UK), was originally broadcast on 3 May 2026.
Animal Disguises was a spin-off of another 1953 mini-series on BBC's Children's Television called Animal Patterns (UK), on which Attenborough worked behind the camera as a producer and director.
He is the only person to have won BAFTA awards for television series made in black and white, colour, HD and 3D formats.
