In April 2023, the United Nations' Population Division estimated India's total population reached 1,425,775,850. This meant it surpassed China (with a peak of 1.426 billion in 2022, followed by a decline), which had held the record since the UN started keeping such records in the 1950s.

According to the United Nations’ projections, India’s population is expected to reach its peak size around 2064 and then to decline gradually.
