The undisputed highest altitude by a single kite is 4,879.54 m (16,009 ft) and was achieved by Robert Moore (Australia) in Cobar, New South Wales, Australia, on 23 September 2014.

The record was attempted at Cable Downs, a 50,000-acre sheep station in western New South Wales, Australia.

Logbooks have emerged from the Lindenberg Meteorological Observatory in Bavaria, Germany, that report a single kite reaching an altitude of 7,358 m (24,140 ft) on 13 July 1938, but there is currently no corroboratory evidence to verify that flight. That said, the same site is widely recognized for achieving the highest altitude by a train of kites: 9,740 m (31,955 ft) for a train of eight kites on 1 August 1919.
