Having first played host to the Olympics in 1900, Paris became the first city to hold the Games twice when it organized the competition again in 1924. That year, France also staged the inaugural Winter Olympics, in Chamonix in the French Alps, thus becoming the first of only three nations in Olympic history to host both the Summer Games and the Winter Games in the same year, the others being the USA in 1932 and Germany in 1936.
