The first Grammy award for Rap was won by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (the latter aka Will Smith; both USA) in 1989 when they were named the first ever winners of the Grammy award for Best Rap Performance with 'Parents Just Don't Understand'.
The pair boycotted the show when they learned that their award presentation would not be shown on TV.
