The earliest Nobel prizes were awarded on 10 December 1901 for contributions to Physics (Wilhelm C. Röntgen, Germany), Chemistry (Jacobus H. van't Hoff, The Netherlands), Physiology or Medicine (Emil A. von Behring, Germany), Literature (Sully Prudhomme, France) and Peace (Jean H. Dunant, Switzerland and Frédéric Passy, France).

The prize itself is named after the founder, Alfred Nobel and consists of a medal, a diploma and financial reward. They are awarded annually in Stockholm, Sweden.
