Thief: The Dark Project became the first stealth game for PC in November 1998. The game was hugely innovative in terms of the stealth genre on the PC platform, forcing players to make use of shadow and sound as key elements of its gameplay. It was also a big hit with the critics, with a score of 89.41% on Gamerankings.com. Thief: The Dark Project was released 10 months after the first 3D stealth game – Tenchu: Stealth Assassins (Aquire, 1998) – hit the PlayStation.
