In 2011, the World Health Organisation published disease mortality rates for all of its 193 member states, based on data gathered during 2008. The highest rate of death from heart disease was found in Ukraine, where deaths from the condition have reached an astonishing 1,070.5 per 100,000 population (more than 1% of all the people living in Ukraine will die from some form of heart disease). Bulgaria was in second place, with 972.1 deaths per 100,000 people. The same trend continues across much of Eastern Europe, with pollution, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking believed to be the principal culprits.
