Taylor Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia” was the 26th No.1 single on the US Billboard Hot 100 for producer Max Martin (Sweden, b. Karl Martin Sandberg). As of 18 October 2025, the five-time Grammy winner had produced or co-produced Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers for the likes of Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Maroon 5, The Weeknd, Coldplay and Ariana Grande. “Ophelia”, which shattered 24-hour and one-week streaming records on Spotify, was Martin’s fifth No.1 with Swift, with whom he wrote and produced the track alongside compatriot Shellback (b. Karl Schuster).
In total, Martin has 28 US chart-toppers on his CV, with writing credits only on *NSYNC’s “It’s Gonna Be Me” and Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl”.
Martin’s most successful US No.1 is “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd. He co-wrote and co-produced the track which, in 2021, was revealed as Billboard’s best-performing song of all time (based on an inverse points system equating to rankings on the weekly Hot 100).
In 2024, Martin bested Sir George Martin, who produced 19 of The Beatles’ 20 US No.1s, as the producer with the most US chart-topping singles. With “Ophelia”, he moves to within four No.1s of Sir Paul McCartney’s record as a songwriter (32).
