The longest mullet hairstyle measured for an established mullet competition in the men's division is 99.06 cm (3 ft 3 in; 39 in), as sported by "Big" Rich Price of Strongsville, Ohio, USA, in the Men's Open of the 2021 US Mullet Championships. He made it through to the final 25 in the "mane" event and finished with ranking of 13th.

Big Rich is the founder of Ohio Fish Rescue - a not-for-profit organization dedicated to saving unwanted pet fish and other aquatic species. The US Mullet Championships is the largest competition of its kind in the world in terms of the number of applicants: upwards of 1,000 each year. According to its founder, Kevin Begola, the mullet - the “business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back" hairstyle - has been around since the time of Ancient Greece, and he cites The Iliad as proof, quoting Homer's description of men with “their forelocks cropped, hair grown long at the backs.” The style has ebbed in and out of popularity over the years. It peaked in popularity in the 1980s thanks to advocates such as actor Patrick Swayze and country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, but by the time the Beastie Boys released their song “Mullet Head” in 1994, its was on its way out. However, it didn't quite die off - in 2010, the Cultural Ministry of Iran had to ban the style for being "too decadent" - and Begola believes that the time is right for a resurgence, particularly following the close of so many hair salons in the COVID-19 pandemic.
