The InSight lander, operated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (USA), has felt the ground shake and heard sonic booms from the crash of asteroids into Mars four times. The biggest and first discovered was on 5 Sep 2021, when an asteroid exploded midair, separating into at least three pieces that left impact craters on the ground. The new impact sites were later photographed by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, confirming that the sound and shaking detected by InSight was caused by an asteroid impact. Earth is the only other planet where the ground shaking and booms of an asteroid impact have been detected.
