Largest bat

The largest bats in the world are the flying foxes, or Old World fruit bats (family Pteropodidae), particularly those living in south-east Asia. Several species in the genera Pteropus and Acerodon have a head-body length of up to 45 centimetres (17.75 inches), a wing-span of 1.7 metres (5 feet 7 inches) and a weight of 1.6 kilograms (3 pounds 12 ounces). The biggest are generally considered to be the Indian flying fox (Pteropus giganteus) and the giant golden-crowned flying fox (Acerodon jubatus). Although certain other mammals are capable of gliding, bats are the only mammals capable of true flight.
