Karolína Plíšková (Czech Republic) thundered down a tournament record 24 aces in defeating Amanda Anisimova in Round 2 at the US Open on 3 September 2021. Fourth seed Plíšková saved a match point on her way to a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 win on New York City’s Arthur Ashe Stadium. Karolína’s twin sister, Kristýna, has held the overall female single-match aces record since 20 January 2016, when she fired off 31 aces in a three-set defeat to Monica Puig in Round 2 of the Australian Open in Melbourne. Coincidentally, 2016 was also the year that Karolína registered the most aces in a single year in WTA history – 530.
Karolína was just the third female player to hit as many as 24 aces in a Grand Slam match, after Serena Williams’ 24 in the 2012 Wimbledon semi-final and Kristýna’s 31 at the 2016 Australian Open. Serving sensation Kristýna has also managed 24 and 28 aces in a single match, at the Birmingham Classic and the Luxembourg Open, respectively, both in 2019.
Aces were first tallied at the US Open in 1998. No data is available before that year.
