The first unsupported crossing over the sea-ice of the Arctic Ocean (via the North Pole) was achieved by Torry Larsen and Rune Gjeldnes (both Norway) as part of their "Arctic Ocean 2000" expedition. They departed Siberia's Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, Russia, on 15 February 2000, travelled to the Geographic North Pole, then ended at Cape Discovery on Canada's Ellesmere Island 109 days later on 3 June 2000.

In all, the pair covered around 2,100 km (1,300 mi). When they departed, each of their sleds laden with supplies weighed about 200 kg (440 lb).

Their journey also represents the fastest time to ski across the Arctic Ocean.

This record was confirmed by the Polar Expeditions Classification Scheme (PECS).
