India has the largest number of tertiary-level educational establishments (universities, colleges and other comparable institutions) with 12,722 as of 2016. This figure includes 799 degree-awarding universities and a further 11,923 "stand alone institutions" offering diplomas in job-specific qualifications such as nursing or teaching.

If India's 39,071 colleges (subsidiary institutions of the main universities, not accredited to award degrees) are included the total rises to 51,793. By comparison, the United States has 3,011 degree-awarding universities and a further 1,616 colleges offering associate's degrees. China's higher education system tends towards a smaller number of much larger institutions, so despite having a much larger student population than the United States, it has only around 3000 higher education institutions total.
