No player – male or female – has won more top-level singles titles at one open-era tournament than Rafael Nadal (Spain), who took the French Open crown for a 14th time on 5 June 2022, adding to his wins in 2005-08, 2010-14 and 2017-20. By winning the 2022 French Open (in straight sets against Casper Ruud, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0), Nadal extended his record over Martina Navratilova (USA, b. Czechoslovakia), who won the now-defunct Ameritech Cup (formerly the Virginia Slims of Chicago and the Avon Championships of Chicago) in Chicago, Illinois, USA, on 12 occasions – in 1978-83, 1986-88 and 1990-92.

Nadal’s 12th French Open title, on 9 June 2019, took him clear of Margaret Court’s 11 Australian Open titles to claim the all-time record for the most wins of one Grand Slam singles tournament – a record he has since extended by defeating Novak Djokovic in 2020 and Ruud in 2022. Nadal has won all 14 of the finals he’s contested at the French Open, and has only lost three of the 115 matches he’s played on the clay at Roland Garros since making his debut there in 2005. Nadal has won 42 sets and lost just seven in his 14 French Open finals to date. Half of his final appearances at Roland Garros have been against his “big three” rivals Roger Federer (4) and Novak Djokovic (3). At 36 years 2 days old, Nadal (b. 3 June 1986) became the oldest men’s singles champion at the French Open, surpassing Spain’s Andrés Gimeno (b. 3 August 1937), who was 34 years 306 days old on 4 June 1972.
