According to the first ever cryptocurrency "rich list" by money magazine Forbes, as of 19 January 2018, the richest cryptobillionaire was Chris Larsen (USA), whose "crypto net worth" was estimated on that day at $7.5–8 billion (£5.4–5.7 billion). Larsen is the co-founder, executive chairman and former CEO of Ripple, and personally owns 5.2 billion XRP – a cryptocurrency used by banks for funds transfers using the Ripple "distributed ledger" protocol.
The rapidly shifting value of cryptocurrency means that analysts can only ever provide a snapshot of the current market, and Forbes elected to lock their figures to 19 January 2018. Forbes explain that their figures come from "estimated holdings of cryptocurrencies (a few provided proof), post-tax profits from trading crypto-assets and stakes in crypto-related businesses" as of that specific date.
