In May 2013, the NASA space probe Voyager 1 recorded sounds in denser regions of ionised gas and plasma in interstellar space. While it's true that "in space, no one can hear you scream" (as per the phrase coined in Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi film Alien), the lack of an oxygen atmosphere is compensated for by general gas and plasma, which can vibrate at audible frequencies. This vibration of sound was picked up by Voyager 1's plasma monitors, recorded and played back to Mission Control, and took the form of a rising tone as the density of the plasma increased. Mission Control heard these sounds only twice – once from October to November 2012 and then again from April to May 2013, when the probe was a distance of 12 billion miles (19 billion km) from the Sun. These are the furthest sounds yet recorded from Earth.
