The first ever hole-in-one shot at an Olympics golf tournament was by Justin Rose (UK) on 11 August 2016 at the Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Of his remarkable hole-in-one shot, Rose said: "It was one of those nice moments. When you are the first to do something, no one can take it away from you. I give my caddie credit for that one. I was going to hit an eight iron but he told me seven and I went with it for a change and it worked out."
Hit with a seven-iron club, Rose's landmark achievement came on the 189-yard, par-3 fourth hole of the Olympic course designed by US architect Gil Hanse. His ball flew to within 10 feet of the flag, bounced twice and rolled straight into the hole. Upon seeing the unlikely outcome, Rose raised his arms and laughed. He later referred modestly to an "element of luck" in the incredible shot.
It was a spectacular way to mark the return of golf to the Olympics for the first time in 112 years.
Rose went on to score an overall 67 for the course and became the first gold medallist since 1904.
