In July 2016, Apple announced that Niantic's augmented-reality game Pokémon GO had been downloaded more times than any other app on the Apple store in its first week of release. The free-to-play mobile title uses GPS technology as players hunt Pokémon in real locations around the world. It was released on 5 July 2016 in Australia and New Zealand, and a day later in the USA. Incredibly, it wasn't released until 22 July in Japan – meaning that Apple's announcement wouldn't even have included Japan's download figures, along with those from Europe, where the game didn't start launching from 13 July onwards.
Despite the official announcement, Apple confirmed that it would not be disclosing actual download figures for the game.
