LEGO's first foray into the toys-to-life genre was the biggest crossover videogame ever. Following its year-two wave of releases, rolling out from 27 September 2016, LEGO® Dimensions (Warner Bros, 2015) featured characters and settings from a total of 27 different franchises that are independent of LEGO®. The full list was DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, Back to the Future, The Wizard of Oz, Scooby-Doo!, Doctor Who, Jurassic World, Ghostbusters, The Simpsons, Portal and Midway Arcade (all year one); The A-Team, Adventure Time, Beetlejuice, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Goonies, Gremlins, Harry Potter, Knight Rider, Mission: Impossible, The Powerpuff Girls, Sonic the Hedgehog and Teen Titans Go! (year two releases); and The Jetsons, The Flintstones, Red Dwarf and 2001: A Space Odyssey as cameos and easter eggs. The final wave of releases was on 12 September 2017 (which included Beetlejuice, The Powerpuff Girls and Teen Titans Go!).

On 23 October 2017, the official LEGO® Dimensions Twitter feed announced that there would be no further packs made available beyond the final wave in September 2017.

If LEGO® franchises were included in this count, the total number licences in the game would total 33. The extra additions would be Legends of Chima, The LEGO® Movie, Ninjago, The LEGO® Batman Movie and LEGO® City.
