Since the mid-noughties, the rise of independent gaming studios coupled with a wider availability of development tools has led to many developers experimenting more freely with videogame design. This has led to "arthouse" becoming a very credible and popular genre within gaming. As of 23 September 2015, the most critically acclaimed arthouse videogame was the PS4 version of Journey (thatgamecompany/Tricky Pixels), which carried a score of 95% on Gamerankings, aggregated from 24 reviews.

Journey was originally released for PS3 in 2012, with an upgraded version releasing digitally for the PS4 in July 2015. The game was praised for its beautiful visuals and dynamic soundtrack, and was described by reviewers as an intensely "emotional" gaming experience. It saw players journeying through a vast desert landscape in order to reach a distant mountain. In a 10 out of 10 review, PSNation said that it was "an exquisite work of art and an experience that will stay with you long after you put the controller down."

An arthouse videogame is best defined as a game that defies traditional gaming conventions whether that be in gameplay design, visual style and/or storytelling. As of 23 September 2015, it was the 24th most critically acclaimed game overall.
