The ceratopsians were prehistory's famous horned dinosaurs, and many were huge in size. However, the lightest ceratopsian was Aquilops americanus, which only weighed 1.5 kg, and was no bigger than a domestic cat. One of the earliest ceratopsians, it existed approximately 107 million years ago during the early Cretaceous in Montana, USA.

Formally described and named in 2014, this tiny ceratopsian species is interesting in that it lacks this dinosaur group's most famous characteristics – the heavy bony skull frill or shield that extended backwards to protect the neck, and the assortment of facial horns that these species usually bore. On account of its somewhat eagle-like beak, however, it was named Aquilops, which translates as "eagle face".
