Part building and part floating gas works, the largest floating liquified natural gas (FLNG) platform is Shell’s 488-m-long (1,601-ft) “Prelude” facility floated out of Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoje, South Korea, in December 2013. The facility is longer than four soccer fields laid end to end – greater than height of the Empire State Building.
The LNG storage tanks could hold the water from 175 Olympic swimming pools.
When complete, Prelude will weigh more than 600,000 tonnes, displacing the same water as six of the world’s largest aircraft carriers. Once in operation, it will operate 475 km north-east of Western Australia for a projected 25 years.
