At the 1982 Grammy Awards, Michael Nesmith (USA) won Video of the Year for Elephant Parts (Pacific Arts, 1981), an hour-long collection of music videos and comedy sketches directed by William Dear. The release, described as the "first commercial video record", featured songs written and performed by the ex-Monkees vocalist/guitarist. Nesmith's video features five full-length music videos: "Magic", "Cruisin'", "Light", "Tonight" and "Rio".

The Video of the Year category is now awarded under the titles Best Short Form Music Video and Best Long Form Music Video. The category rewards "video cassettes or discs in any format created specifically for the home video market".

The 24th Grammy Awards were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California, USA, on 24 February 1982.
