Rafael Nadal (Spain) won his 14th French Open singles title on 5 June 2022, defeating Norway’s Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 in the final on Court Philippe-Chatrier in Paris. Nadal, 36, had previously been crowned French Open champion in 2005-08, 2010-14 and 2017-20. No other player – male or female – has won one of tennis’ four Grand Slam singles tournaments more than nine times since the open era began in 1968.
Nadal has won all 14 of the finals he’s contested at the French Open and has accumulated 112 wins (from 115 matches in total) since making his debut there in 2005. Nadal's success at the 2022 French Open secured a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title and took him five singles-tournament wins ahead of Martina Navratilova, who won nine Wimbledon titles during her career (1978-79, 1982–87 and 1990), and Novak Djokovic, who has won nine finals at the Australian Open (2008, 2011-13, 2015-16 and 2019-21). Margaret Court won the Australian Open 11 times (1960–66, 1969–71 and 1973), but only four of those victories came in the open era. Nadal’s 2022 triumph came 17 years to the day after claiming his first title in Paris, against Argentina’s Mariano Puerta on 5 June 2005. At 36 years 2 days old, Nadal (b. 3 June 1986) became the oldest men’s singles champion at the French Open, surpassing Spain’s Andrés Gimeno (b. 3 August 1937), who was 34 years 306 days old on 4 June 1972.
