On Sunday, 14 October 2012, eight million people logged on to YouTube to watch skydiver Felix Baumgartner (Austria) make a 38,969.4-m (127,852-ft) descent to Earth from the edge of space, the natural conclusion of the five-year $20 million Red Bull Stratos project. The audience was the largest ever for a livestream event, which featured extensive use of the sponsor's logo and branding, and would have been even larger had demand not out-stripped server capabilities.
By way of a comparison, the livestream audience for the 2012 Olympics peaked at a little over half a million.
Felix Baumgartner passed away on 17 July 2025. Alongside this record he also achieved a number of incredible feats, including the fastest speed in freefall and becoming the first human to break the sound barrier in freefall.
